Exercise Science & Kinesiology Transfer Major, AA

Campus: Clinton, Muscatine, and Scott Community Colleges

Do you enjoy physical exercise or sports and like helping others optimize their physical health? The transfer major in Exercise Science and Kinesiology has been designed to provide the knowledge and skills to work in a number of health-related careers. This program is for students interested in transferring to a four-year institution with a major related to Exercise Science or Kinesiology.

Transfer Institutions: Iowa State University, State University of Iowa, and Northern Iowa. Some of these institutions may have additional requirements. Please see your advisor for more information.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Exercise Science & Kinesiology Transfer Major program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of nutritional, anatomical, and physiological terminology.
  2. Identify selected anatomical structures of the musculoskeletal system.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the roles of essential nutrients in relation to physical fitness.
  4. Evaluate the key components of a balanced diet for: dietary requirements, potential disease risks, and athletic performance.
  5. Identify the impact of culture, diversity, and socioeconomic status on health.
  6. Evaluate scientific information to make informed decisions
  7. Explain the interrelationships of homeostasis and feedback loops in relation to whole body functioning.
  8. Correlate anatomical structures and physiological functions of all body systems, including cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal systems.

If BIO-114 or BIO-157 is taken, the student will need four additional Physical Science credits (and fewer Elective credits) to satisfy the General Education requirement.

Select a Computer Skills course (3 credits)

Electives (up to 11 credits required)


Select coursework based on content area/endorsement.

Students choose electives according to their needs and interests and the requirements of their intended transfer college to complete the 62 credit hours required of an Associate of Arts degree. While electives generally are chosen from any Arts and Science course numbered above 100, a maximum of 4 credit hours in SDV courses and 16 credit hours in career technical courses may be applied toward an AA.
